Work-life balance. This statement makes me cringe, and I think it is wrong in a few ways.

To start with, we have one life. So the concept of separation between work and life doesn’t make sense unless you feel completely dead inside while you work, which is (unfortunately) not uncommon. Your life is now, regardless of what you do in it.

Another thing is the balance is already on the work side. Most people spend 5 days a week at work, the most precious times of the day. So whatever you do, there’s no balance if you work more than 3.5 days per week.

Although many people I know are not really satisfied with their work, sometimes I come across people who are so convinced that they’re blessed with the job they have. This may sound like a great thing, and they may indeed have found the “dream job” everyone talks about, but it may also mean that they have never actually questioned what’s possible for them and had the chance to discover it.

It may mean that they’re scared to think about who they could be without the sense of security and the identity their job provides for them. They may not want to face the responsibility of taking full ownership of their lives.

Does any of the above resonate with you?

Many of us find ourselves in a rat race and in a world of responsibilities without finding the chance to discover our true potential and what we really want in life. That way, having at least a sense of “balance” between work and life becomes necessary for us. But the main question is, do we really want this balance, or would we rather have something else if we could choose anything we want?

And the thing is, deep (deep) inside, you don’t want work-life balance.

What you really want is freedom. Freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want, with whoever you want.

And this is the interesting part.

Freedom requires you to live an unbalanced life (at least for a while). Freedom awaits you if you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone, learn what it takes to achieve what you really want to do, take action by overcoming the fear of failing, being judged or criticised, and do this again and again.

But it’s worth the effort. In the end, regardless of what you achieve, you’ll discover who you are and your life's purpose.

The beautiful thing is, in the whole history of mankind, there have never been more opportunities for anyone to become truly free. Just with an internet connection, you can reach anyone in the world, learn anything you want, and become whoever you want.

What stops you from being free? Where are you in your journey of freedom?

Let me know your thoughts.
